Is your head flaking with dandruff? Not sure what’s causing it? Well we hate to break it to you but the culprit is none other than sunny Singapore. Yes, humid weather and high temperatures can greatly aggravate dandruff.
It’s not the main cause per say but it does create an environment where Malassezia (a type of fungi) thrives. And this causes excessive shedding of skin cells, also known as dandruff. Nonetheless, dandruff can be easily controlled and you can do so with a few simple steps:
Tip 1: Wash Regularly and Thoroughly
Singapore’s humid climate will cause sweat and oil to build up. This creates an ideal breeding ground for Malassezia to grow. Regular washing is your first line of defence as it keeps your scalp clean and reduces the presence of fungi.
Depending on how bad your flakes are, you might have to wash it more frequently than often. More importantly, remember to wash both your hair and scalp. People tend to make the mistake of only washing their hair.
Dandruff originates from the scalp however so always focus on washing your scalp. Ensure you get the shampoo deep into your scalp and gently massage it with your finger tips.
Tip 2: Use the Right Shampoo
Washing your hair is one thing but using the right shampoo is equally important. A shampoo that makes your hair smell good doesn’t necessarily make it “good” for your hair.
Avoid products that contain harsh ingredients such as parabates, sulphate and silicone. These ingredients contain drying properties which can worsen dandruff. Opt for natural products that are formulated for dandruff control.
These ingredients usually contain zinc pyrithione (ZPT), ketoconazole or coal tar. They have proven effectiveness in combating scalp fungi and reducing dandruff.
Tip 3: Avoid Heat Styling Tools and Hair Products
Minimise the use of heat styling tools like hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons. These heat generating devices will strip moisture off your scalp and cause more fungal growth.
On the plus side, ditching these tools will help your hair grow much stronger. It’ll be less prone to frizz, breakage or further damage. When it comes to hair products, be mindful of the ingredients.
Many styling products contain chemicals that irritate the scalp and worsen dandruff. Choose products that are “gentle” or “suitable for sensitive skin”.
Tip 4: Eat Right and Stay hydrated
Diet plays a big role in managing dandruff. In fact, having a healthy diet will significantly improve the overall health of your scalp and hair. A “dandruff diet” usually consists of food that is rich in healthy fats, zinc and protein.
You should also limit the amount of sugar and yeast in your diet as they increase inflammation and encourage fungal growth. On top of that, it’s important to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.
It prevents your scalp from becoming dry which tends to happen in an environment like Singapore.
Tip 5: Take a Break, Destress and Sleep
Stress can be a major contributor to dandruff. It disrupts your skin and weakens your immune system. This will make your scalp prone to Malassezia and that’s when the dandruff kicks in.
If your job has you scratching your head more often than not, it’s probably a good time to take a break. Go on a vacation, take a day off or maybe practise mindfulness. It’ll be good for your scalp and overall health. In addition, make sure you get plenty of rest.
A consistent sleep routine will strengthen your immune system, helping your body combat dandruff.
Tip 6: Wear Your Hair Wisely
Hairstyles are an important part of looking good. However, choosing the wrong one will actually affect your scalp. Tight hairstyles that pull on the hair shaft can create tension and contribute to scalp irritation.
Combined with the humidity of Singapore, and you have yourself a recipe for dandruff. Avoid hairstyles like ponytails, braids and buns and opt for more free-flowing styles like loose waves or a simple down-do.
Or just keep your hair shorter than usual as it is much easier to maintain.
Tip 7: Seek a Professional
When all else fails, it’s probably a good idea to get professional help. They have the expertise and knowledge to help you combat dandruff and maintain a healthy scalp.
